Risk of Communication Gaps: Uncovering Type IL Truths

Duration: 72

It is very likely that your concrete is not behaving the same as it did last year or a handful of years ago. If you’re lucky, imported cements control your market and nothing has changed. Regardless, after more than three decades, a significant performance change is taking place for sustainability and you may not know it. What are the risks? What are the truths? What should you do?

Type IL cement, also known as Portland-Limestone Cement (PLC), is a blended cement that contains 5–15% limestone. It’s made up of typical Portland cement and unburned limestone that acts as a filler. Type IL cement has a higher limestone content, optimized particle packing, and enriched nucleation sites. It’s manufactured with less embodied energy than ordinary Portland cement (OPC).

Although Type IL is engineered with a higher limestone content to reduce the carbon footprint of concrete and it is documented to provide ultimate strengths similar to Type I,II cement, is it suitable for the same applications from a performance perspective? In what ways will your projects be different?
